The short answer: Autotrader is a marketplace run by Cox Automotive. Through its OnRamp program, select independent dealers list cars on Autotrader.com and KBB.com with no subscription and pay a fee per listing. Google vehicle ads charge for clicks, on a budget you set, and send the shopper to that car’s page on your own website. Autotrader does not publish its prices, so the only fair comparison is your own cost per lead.

How Autotrader charges independent dealers
Autotrader’s OnRamp page says “No subscriptions” and lists an optional pay-per-listing package to list “an unlimited number of additional vehicles on KBB.com and Autotrader.com.” The fee per listing is charged at the rate in effect when you list, and it may be waived for cars floor-planned with NextGear Capital or bought through Manheim. The page gives no dollar amount, and signing up goes through a representative.
Franchise dealers buy separate Autotrader listing packages, which are not covered here.
What Autotrader does well
- Two big sites at once. OnRamp listings show on Autotrader.com and Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com.
- Inventory tools included. OnRamp decodes VINs, holds photos and descriptions, shows KBB and Manheim values, and prints window stickers and FTC Buyers Guides.
- No monthly subscription. You pay when you list.
Where Google vehicle ads are different
Google says a click on a vehicle ad “will take the customer to the vehicle description page (VDP) on your website” (Google).
- The shopper is on your website, with your phone number, your forms and the rest of your inventory in front of them.
- The shopper chose that car. They searched, saw its photo, price and mileage, and clicked on it.
- You set and change the budget any day, and can focus it on the cars you most need to move.
- You own the account and the data, so you see every search and click behind each lead.
Google vehicle ads take more setup and ongoing management than a marketplace listing. A click is not a lead, so your car pages have to turn visits into calls. Our technical guide lists every requirement.
How to compare them with your own numbers
- Autotrader cost per lead: your monthly Autotrader charges divided by the leads Autotrader sent you that month.
- Google cost per lead: run a test budget for 30 to 60 days with call and form tracking, then divide the ad spend by the leads.
- Cost per sale: if your CRM records the lead source, compare the cost per car sold too.
Our cost-per-lead calculator puts both side by side.
Do you have to choose?
No. You can list on Autotrader and advertise on Google at the same time. With tracking on both, your own numbers show where the next dollar should go.
